Learning Photography

While photography has become increasingly popular lately, there’s no doubt that the depth and breadth of the subject can become daunting. Topics range from composition and lighting to equipment and technology. If you’re new to photography, there are many resources available to help you move beyond basic pointing and shooting. Here are several websites that you’ll find useful, regardless of your level of experience:

Jodie Coston’s online photography course (at morguefile.com), once a more structured class, is now free and entirely available to the public. It begins with the basic fundamentals of photography and covers both artistic and technical elements. Each section also contains assignments designed to strengthen the focus of the lesson. Anyone who wishes to advance beyond casual photography should definitely read through these lessons. Also, first-time owners of SLR cameras will find the course very helpful.

The Digital Photography School blog contains an overwhelming number of tips, advice, and lessons for photography beginners and experts alike. The “Tips for Beginners” category is a good place to start for anyone new to photography, and other categories are available for help with a variety of topics such as portraiture and post-production.

John Harvey Photo divides all of the fundamental basics of photography into various sections, each with insightful advice for photographers of all levels. Also, while some of the sections may not cover everyday situations, such as “Tide Pools”, they still provide interesting insights (especially the “Giving Up” section).

The Fred Miranda photography forums are extremely active amongst both amateur and professional photographers. Topics cover every aspect of photography from the artistic to the technical. Readers can enter weekly and monthly contests, share recent work, and ask for critiques and advice. The equipment review section is very thorough and useful to anyone looking to purchase a new camera or lens.
