The Big Picture: Faces of Sudan

June 13th, 2008 by Bryan

Boston.com recently started The Big Picture, a news and photography blog in which the news is shown with photos much larger than those usually published for news purposes. (We couldn’t help but notice the similarities to Collective Lens, and we think The Big Picture is definitely worth seeing.) The most recent entry is entitled Faces of Sudan and displays some very well done photographs of some the people most affected by the tragic events over the last few years in the region. In addition to the displaced victims, there are also photos of the horrific damage done to villages and towns as well as pictures of soldiers fighting in the conflict.

News coverage often tries to explain the causes, the groups involved, the political and military solutions. What isn’t seen as often are the faces of those involved - the displaced, the antagonists, the survivors, the leaders, and the followers. These are some of the faces of Darfur and Abyei, Sudan, photographed where they are today, some very far from home.
