Gipsy boy

Gipsy boy

I took this portrait of a gipsy boy during my visit in Ocna Mures - a town in Romania. The purpose of my visit was to document the aftermath of the sinking of a shopping centre in the centre of the town.

I visited this woman's simple store and in back she sat on the ground creating with skill hands these beautiful pots. Her face was humble and full of joy. I was moved in deep respect for her imagination and creativity.

Wake up call.

Wake up call.

The 2011 drought in Texas is making history. From LCRA.org, "The 11 months from October 2010 through August 2011 have been the driest for that 11-month period in Texas since 1895, when the state began keeping rainfall records. This summer in Texas has been the hottest in the country's history, according to the National Weather Service."

If it wasn't evident before that water is a luxury that we shouldn't take for granted than it certainly should be now.

Jumping for joy!

Why is this child happy? She isn't living on the streets anymore.

According to the Austin/Travis County Ending Community Homelessness Coalition there are more than 500 homeless families in Austin and 90% of those are headed up by single mothers. Most of these women have a limited education and have suffered some form of abuse.

Letting go

Letting go

This photo was captured on Mother's Day. The foster parent requested that I take photos of her with the child she had taken care of for almost two years, but who within weeks was to be returned to her birth mother. It was heartbreaking to hear their story, but I felt honored to have met such a loving and selfless individual.

Facts & insight into the subject of foster care:

In the United States 463,000 live in foster care. Children enter foster care for a number of reasons.

18.8% Physical Abuse
7.9% Emotional abuse
6.2% Sexual Abuse
3.2% Caretaker Inability

La Carpio, Costa Rica: Bubbles and Hope

La Carpio, Costa Rica: Bubbles and Hope

Two men hang out the opening in their makeshift "Casa" in La Carpio, a slum town south of San José, la Pura Vida's capital. As a volunteer travel member with Soles4Souls, I was able to help the people of this resilient community founded by Nicaraguan refugees. Besides fitting over 700 citizens with new shoes, our group had the rare experience of roaming the unpaved roads of what is thought of to be one of the most dangerous areas of the country. I beg to differ. Big time.
